Quit Smoking – How to Think Like a Non-Smoker

Anyone who has tried to quit smoking will readily identify with a quote attributed to Mark Twain. He said, “giving up smoking is the easiest thing in the world. I know because I’ve done it thousands of times!”

There is no doubt that quitting smoking is difficult. Nicotine is a powerful and addictive drug, and even when all the nicotine has left our bodies there is still a psychological addiction that may affect us months or even years after we have had our last cigarette. Although unsuccessful quitters may moan about the physical withdrawal symptoms it is the psychological addiction that is more challenging. Unless you change your thinking about smoking you will always be in a vulnerable position when it comes to cigarettes.

Unfortunately quotes like Mark Twain’s and the thousands of books and articles telling the potential ex-smoker how difficult quitting is, can be harmful to the smokers ability to stop. These bad news messages can become self-fulfilling prophecies, and anyone who wants to quit smoking can approach the process with a fear of failure that is ultimately destructive.

Mental attitude, and our deep held beliefs are the most important factors when it comes to successfully giving up cigarettes. The physical addiction can be coped with and if necessary you can get the some nicotine replacement products to ease that physical process, but overcoming the mental and psychological addiction can be more difficult. It is ultimately the factor that decides whether or not you succeed in quitting smoking.

There is a difference here between becoming an ex-smoker and becoming a non-smoker. An ex-smoker is someone who was still wants to smoke and who still has the psychological desire to light a cigarette, especially when he sees others smoking or it is situation he associates with smoking. A non-smoker, however, has no feelings of loss or withdrawal. The non-smoker does not regard smoking with any kind of longing and is not affected by people around him or her smoking, or by social situations where previously smoking would have been the norm.

So how do you make that vital mental change and become a true non-smoker? There are some lucky people who just resolve to quit smoking, and never smoke again. They can do this because they have made a determined decision and they allow no one and nothing to get in the way of their goal. Unfortunately, not all of us are so lucky. Most of us need a little help to make that change.

The best form of help you can get to change your mind about smoking is hypnotherapy. Hypnosis can change your mind deep down in the subconscious so that your whole attitude to smoking is changed. By relaxing deeply it is possible to replace the internal ‘movies’ that keep you smoking. You can change into a non-smoker by learning to think like a non-smoker.
