6. Cough- Saffron is used as an expectorant for relieving phlegm, cough and whooping cough. It is also useful in treating asthma patients.

7. Other medicinal uses-Some studies also point out that saffron has anticarcinogic properties and prevents cell mutations as well. The antioxidant properties of saffron are also being explored. Saffron extracts have also been found useful in patients who have depression.

8. Spice- Apart from the above mentioned medicinal uses saffron is also used as a spice. It is used for yellow coloring of the food, as a spice and also as a flavoring agent.

9. Other uses- Saffron extract have also been used in perfumes for fragrance and as dyes for hair coloring.

Side effects:

Saffron has been found to lower dietary intake. The property can be useful for treating obese patients and for reducing weight. It increases the level of serotonin (a hormone) in brain which inhibits compulsive eating. Other side effects of saffron include dizziness, dry mouth, drowsiness and headache. Large amount of saffron consumption can cause internal bleeding and vomiting and can induce toxicity.

Saffron is widely available in various forms in grocery stores. It can be used as a ready-to-use spice, as a dye etc. Saffron supplements are also available. Many expectorants and other herbal drugs contain saffron.
