Today I’m going to share with you what is choline and how it is helpful. Perhaps you have noticed this nutrient in a dietary multivitamin and wondered what it does. According to Dr. Weil choline is not really considered a vitamin, but it’s a micro nutrient. Micro nutrients are things people need a very tiny amount of to keep good health. Then there is something known as macro nutrients, which someone needs a lot of and a few examples would be fats, proteins and carbohydrates.

This nutrient was originally discovered in the 1930’s when scientists found it in the pancreas. Then being the curious creatures humans are, we did more studies and found out it was in every single cell. At this point you are probably wondered what the heck it does for human health right?

One of its many uses is to keep a cell’s membrane fluid, yet not allowing fluid to pass through it. It’s also used in the nervous system molecule known as acetylcholine. To show you just how important this molecule is, the part of your nervous system that runs the heart and even the intestines uses acetylcholine. In fact every muscle you move requires a signal from this molecule.

The good news is that if someone is deficient in choline likely their heart, intestines or muscles will not shut down. Some symptoms that someone isn’t consuming enough of this nutrient is that they may feel fatigued more often than they should. They could experience cognitive problems, such as trouble remembering things and experience nerve or muscle problems. It also could negatively affect the kidneys resulting in a folate acid deficiency more likely.

Folate acid is needed to make red blood cells that carry oxygen around the human body. It’s especially important with women because if a pregnant woman doesn’t have enough folate acid it increases the chance of her giving birth to a baby with a neural tube defect by around 70%. A neural tube defect almost always results in the death of a baby. More bad news is that according to Dr. Weil a deficiency of this nutrient has been connected to an increased risk of liver cancer.

In conclusion you really should ensure you are not deficient in this nutrient. The good news is that it’s in a lot of foods such as eggs, beef, broccoli, peanut butter, fish and even chocolate. Another idea is just to take a good daily multivitamin to ensure you’re getting all the nutrients your body needs.
