Dr. Weston, Sunwarrior’s resident health expert takes on a familiar superfood, the grapefruit. Grapefruit is a fairly new species of citrus that actually came from the combination of an orange and pomelo. This remarkable fruit is low in calories, about 80 or less for the whole fruit. It is rich in vitamin C, bioflavonoid antioxidants, vitamin A, B1, B5, B9, copper, and potassium. It is also a rich source of pectin, the fiber most commonly associated with apples. This soluble fiber helps lower cholesterol and triglycerides while clearing the intestines of debris. Grapefruit ranges from white to pink to ruby red. The darker ones are better in terms of antioxidants, like lycopene. There is a warning though. Grapefruit has a unique ability to prevent some medications from breaking down during digestion, so it can cause dangerous overdose interactions with many prescriptions, so know before you plunge in the grapefruit spoon or take a sip of that juice.
