Vitamin A Benefits, Uses and Side Effects

Vitamin A is needed in the formation of our teeth and bones, immune system, eyes and skin. It also acts as an antioxidant to rid our body of free radicals, which cause us to age more quickly. Deficiency is one of the most common causes of blindness in children living in developing countries.

Among its many jobs in the body, vitamin A (retinol) is also a DNA modulator; telling the immature dermal cells found under the uppermost layer of our skin to emerge to the surface. Without adequate amounts of this vitamin available, cell turnover is interrupted and can lead to premature aging of the skin.

Failure to get enough of this fat-soluble vitamin can also permanently stunt the growth of infants – both in the womb and after birth. It’s estimated that over 700,000 children die each year because of inadequate intake of vitamin A, which is found in the largest doses in fresh fish (primarily fish livers), animal livers, and chicken eggs in smaller amounts.
