One of the most important things about dealing with stress is learning to recognize it. We might feel like we can push through something that’s uncomfortable, but really it’s healthier for our mind and our body to kind of recognize what’s going on, and take steps so that we can start to feel better. So when the body goes into fight or flight, it’s pretty easily recognizable, the pupils dilate, the breathing quickens, your mouth gets dry, your muscles tense and tighten, and your heart rate increases. Basically, your body is ready to help you stand and fight whatever you’re facing or get yourself out of there and into safety. Some of the longer-term signs and symptoms of stress can include insomnia, chest pain, nausea, dizziness, constipation, and a decreased sex drive. Some of the mental or cognitive signs and symptoms can include inability to concentrate, difficulty making decisions, racing thoughts. Some of the emotional signs and symptoms of stress are an inability to relax, feeling overwhelmed with everyday tasks, things like that. So if you’re experiencing any of these things you’re most likely experiencing some form of stress, and you can recognize that, stop, take a deep breath, and get into action to start to feel better.
