5 Disgusting Chemicals In Cigarettes
Are you a smoker? You might be shocked to see what is actually in a cigarette…
Number 5 – Arsenic
There are over 4000 chemicals created in a burning cigarette. 69 of those chemicals are known to cause cancer. Arsenic is one of them. Arsenic is a natural element that can be found in rocks and soil, water, air and in plants and animals. It can also be released into the environment from some agricultural and industrial sources. However, arsenic is commonly used as poison. Therefore, exposure to high enough amounts of arsenic can be fatal. Symptoms in the long term include: liver and kidney damage, irregular heartbeat and a shortage of red and white blood cells.
Number 4 – Ammonia
Ammonia is a raw material used in the manufacture of fertilisers, explosives and cleaning fluids. It’s produced using a reaction between nitrogen and hydrogen called the Haber process. Some ammonia is converted into nitric acid which itself is used in the manufacture of fertilisers and explosives. Ammonia is also a useful ingredient in some cleaning fluids. Essentially, you are just smoking Cillit Bang. Bang and your lungs are gone…
Number 3 – Carbon Monoxide
Carbon monoxide is a poisonous gas that has no smell or taste. Breathing it in can make you feel unwell and can also kill. After breathing in carbon monoxide, it enters your bloodstream and mixes with haemoglobin (the part of red blood cells that carry oxygen around your body), to form carboxyhaemoglobin. When this happens, the blood is no longer able to carry oxygen, and this lack of oxygen causes the body’s cells and tissue to die.
Number 2 – Polonium
Yes this is the exact radioactive substance that Stewie uses to power his time machine in Family Guy. Polonium is a highly radioactive substance discovered by Marie Curie, who did unfortunately die from too much exposure of radiation in 1934. When polonium enters the body, it can cause liver and kidney damage, along with extreme nausea and severe headaches. Victims often experience vomiting, diarrhea and hair loss. The alpha particles emitted from the decaying substance get absorbed in the body, which is what causes harm. Death may come in a matter of days, sometimes weeks.
Number 1 – Cyanide
Cyanide is a fast-acting, deadly chemical that can exist as both a gas and as a crystalline salt. Both forms can be lethal in high enough concentrations. Cyanide prevents the cells of the body from using oxygen. When this happens, the cells die. People exposed to a small amount of cyanide by breathing it, absorbing it through their skin, or eating foods that contain it may have some or all of the following signs and symptoms within minutes: dizziness, headache, nausea and vomiting, rapid breathing, rapid heart rate, restlessness and weakness.
