Vitamin E Benefits for Hair Loss and Regrowth

Possible vitamin E benefits for hair loss have been revealed by research into prostate enlargement and vitamin E succinate.

Vitamin E Benefits for Hair Loss

Hair loss in men is largely governed by the same androgen hormonal factor involved in prostate enlargement and prostate cancer, namely dihydrotestosterone (DHT). The succinate version of vitamin E has demonstrated specific DHT inhibiting effects which implies possible vitamin E benefits for hair loss.

In a recent study androgen-dependent human prostate cancer cells were used to discover how vitamin E succinate prevents and combats cancer.

Vitamin E succinate was compared to the anti-androgen drug, flutamide. While the addition of flutamide largely failed to combat growth stimulated by the addition of the androgen DHT, vitamin E succinate proved to be successful.

Vitamin E succinate may therefore demonstrate rare vitamin E benefits for hair loss by its effectiveness in surpressing DHT levels in the scalp, the main factor in male pattern hair loss.

Another study sought to determine the vitamin e succinate effect on prostate specific antigen (PSA), a marker for prostate cancer. PSA expression was induced by the addition of DHT to the cell culture. When vitamin E succinate was added, levels of PSA expression and androgen receptor protein levels were suppressed.

The androgen receptor is required for the initiation and progression of prostate cancer and male pattern hair loss. Vitamin E succinate was inhibiting DHT, demonstrating another of the potential vitamin E benefits for hair loss.
