Reduced levels of immune cells (Lymphopenia) is a common finding amongst those those infected with increased COVID-19 disease severity.

In fact, low white blood cells counts, especially lymphocytes is being used as a reliable indicator to classify moderate, severe, and critical ill patients.

There’s ample data emerging from case reports that immunosenescence (aged immune cells) plays a role in the disease progression in those with COVID-19 ; especially those with severe disease states.

Cytotoxic T Lymphocytes and NK get exhausted via affecting the immune system checkpoint inhibitor NKG2A on key immune cells, which is found to be increased in those with high disease severity.
