Infertility: Definition, causes and treatment
The general definition of infertility is when a couple has been unable to get pregnant following a year of trying or not using prevention. However, if a woman is over 35 or has irregular cycles, she should visit an infertility specialist sooner, says Elizabeth Kennard, MD, of The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center. As Dr. Kennard explains, about a third of the time, infertility is caused by issues with sperm, another third of the time with egg production, quality or hormone imbalance, and the remaining third by issues with reproductive organs, such as the fallopian tubes. Therefore, both partners, male and female, will be tested fairly early in the process. Even in the 10 percent of cases where a specific issue cannot be pinpointed, there are treatments available, says Dr. Kennard.
